2019-20 Season

Martin Binks, Conductor

“I would like to welcome you to the 129th season of Leeds Symphony Orchestra – we are very proud that we have had a continuous existence of 130 years, making us one of the oldest orchestras in the UK.

This season is particularly special for me in that it is my 50th with LSO. This anniversary is specially marked in the May concerts and I am delighted that our president, Craig Ogden, will be appearing with us, playing Arthur Butterworth’s tuneful and dramatic Guitar Concerto, which Butterworth composed specially for Craig and me more than 20 years ago.
These concerts conclude with the most famous of all symphonies, Beethoven’s Fifth.

We are inviting two guest conductors who will each conduct half of the concerts in November and February: John Lyon will be conduction Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 in November and Christopher Pelly will be conducting works by Sibelius, George Butterworth and Holst in February.

Our soloist in November is Savva Zverev playing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, one of the most well-loved concertos in the repertoire. Savva has been studying at the Royal Northern College of Musivc in Manchester and I believe he has a great career ahead of him.

A highlight of the February concerts will undeniably be Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, one of the 20th century’s major virtuoso works for orchestra. We first played this wonderful work in 2005 when it was well received by players and audiences alike.
The Orchestra and I look forward to seeing you at our concerts.”
